Raising Children and Dogs Together

One of the most common questions that dog owners ask is, how can I raise children and dogs well? Dogs are not people and are not human and while the two might be compatible, it would be wise to be careful with them because they are not. Many people keep wondering how they can raise children and dogs to be loving companions. The answer is simple, they must be taught to be good ones.

The first step in raising children and dogs together is establishing an understanding between the two. The dog must understand that children are not people and vice versa. This is the biggest mistake most dog owners make. They think that they can simply get out of their house when their kids cry or get out of the yard when they want a walk. Children need more than this.

Raising children and dogs together can be accomplished by teaching them a puppy pack mentality. For instance, if you want to teach your dog that he needs to be more submissive around children, you can use a crate. First of all, your dog will know that children will be there. It is not possible for him to run outside and away with all the toys and food but if you call him, he will be happy to come. He will also understand that you will be there when he cries and begs for affection. Make sure that you don’t use a crate as a punishment, because they won’t understand. Just be consistent in calling your dog every time he needs to come out or the next time he wants to go out.
